Etymology

'Hip or dog-rose farmstead', v. hēope 'hip, fruit of the wild-rose' or hēopa 'dog-rose, bramble', and tūn-stall; for this type of p.n. cf. Saltonstall 125supra . For the first el. cf. Hebden infra . The spellings do not favour Ekwall's suggestion (RN 193) that Hepton - is an assimilated form of Hebden with stall 'stable'.
