Slaughter Ho, 1839ValS , Sowterhous 1517 HAS 7, 140, 1709 WMB, Sowterhowse in Sorbye 1582 WillY, Souther house 1750 TaxS, Sawter House 1805 HAS 16, 64. v. sūtere 'shoemaker' (possibly used as a by-name or surname), hūs ; cf. Souter Ho 167infra , from which it is distinct; Slaughter is merely the substitution of an 'intelligible' word.
