Etymology

Turley Holes, 1624 Greave, 1709 WMB, Tornelymosse 1314 Watson 77, Turneleye mosse 1315 WCR, Turmleemosse 1331 ib, Turnley 1608 Stansf, Turleclogh 1492MinAcct , Tirleyholes 1589 WillY, Turleehoiles 1654 PRHept. 'Round clearing', v. trun , lēah , and mos 'a bog', clōh 'dell', hol 1 'hollow'. It is difficult to separate the spellings for Turley from those of Turn Lee in Sowerby 150supra , but topographically the mos is more likely to belong to Turley than to Turn Lee, which has the same origin.
