Etymology

Hoyle Ho, 1529 Watson 652, 1568 Arm, Hole House 1574 WillY, Hoyle 1579 PRHfx, 1693 Rent 69, Hoile howse 1582 Arm, le Hoole 1591FGr 5, Hoylhous 1709 WMB. The house was doubtless named from the family of Hoile , Hoyle who resided here (Arm 393, 432, HAS 8, 281, etc.), though their name is of local origin from le Hoole in the immediate vicinity, v. hol 1 'a hollow, a hole'; for the form Hoyle cf. Phonol. § 28.
