  • The Slode 1709 WMB

Etymology

Slode, the Sload 1624 Greave, 1662 HAS 17, 216, The Slode 1709 WMB, of obscure origin, but possibly from an OE  *slād 'slide, slippery place' or the like (cf. OE slīdan , pa.t. slād 'to slide'); Sload is just below the peak of a hill by Mount Tabor Rd.; the name may therefore be also ultimately related to the obsolete Do dial. sloading 'athwart a hill' (EDD s.v.).
