Etymology

Falling Royd, Falgerode 13 Wads (c. 1250 HAS 3), Fallougherode 1387 PT 36 (HAS), Fallandrode 1403 Stansf, 1486 HAS 3, Fallandroid c. 1600 ib 4, 74, Fallandroyd (e )1650, 1656 PRHept, Falgynroyd 1491 Watson 24, Fallonroid 1644 PRHept, Fallingroide 1657 WillS. The identity of Falgerode , Fallougherode is uncertain and may not belong here. Although these spellings and Falgyn - point to OE  falh 'land broken up for cultivation' or preferably to falgandy the pres.part.form of OE  falgian 'to break up (land)', the latter is usually transitive.Apart from the Falg - spellings, the name could be from ONb  fallande , pres.part. of fallan 'to fall' and denote 'a clearing which falls from higher to lower ground', v. rod 1 . Like Hanging Royd (v. foll.) the place is on a very steep bank.
