Etymology

Clunters, 1624 Greave, 1669FGr 20, 1758 TaxS. The el. clunter occurs several times in late names in this par. (cf. Clunter Clough 126supra , Clunters 164, 180, 197); it is dial. clunter 'a clod of earth' (related to, if not a loan from, MDu  clunter 'a lump').
