Etymology

Batthill 1664YAS 212 cf. also the Hayley Carr 1778EnclA ; there was also the Halifax surname de Haylay 1311 WCR, de Hayeley 1323 ib, common as Hailey from the sixteenth century (PRHfx passim ) and derived from the p.n. Hayley from which Haley Hill is also named. The first el. is probably OE  (ge)hæg 'enclosure', the compound meaning 'enclosed clearing' or the like; v. lēah , hyll .
