Etymology

'The western third (of Yorkshire)', v. west , þriðjung . On the origin of the Riding name v. Introd. 64-5 supra . In 1279-98 the Riding court was held at Wingate Hill in Stutton township near the Roman road from Tadcaster to the south (v. iv, 76).
