Etymology

v. ēa-land 'land by the river'; it is on the south bank of the R. Calder. Yealand Close i, 177supra is a parallel name. It is worth noting that 6 of the 9 townships in the Chapelry of Elland contain land as the final el. On the development of prosthetic [j] in the spelling Yeland and the dialect pronunciation [ˈjelənd] which used to be current, cf. Phonol. § 34.
