Etymology

'Crooked stream', v. crumb , wella , botm (boðm) 'valley bottom'.Cf. Cromwheel (Ilkley) pt. iv infra , Cromwell Nt 185. OE  crumb frequently appears in p.ns. as Crom -, Crum - with loss of -b -, as in Crimden Nb 57 Cromhall Gl. The early spelling with -walle - is from Merc  wælla .
