Etymology

Stiperden (Bank), Styp 'den 1596 Stansf, Styperden , Stiperden 1596 HAS 7, 219, 1659 PRHeptet freq to 1751 Rent, Stiperden Bank 1817 M, Stoperdaine clough 1670 Stansf. 'Valley where posts or props were obtained' or 'one marked by posts' (perhaps as boundary marks, since Stiperden forms part of the Lancashire boundary), from OE  stipere , denu ; cf. dial. stiper 'the post in a doorway against which double doors are shut, one of the four main posts of a wooden loom' (EDD s.v.).v. banke , clōh .
