Etymology

Probably this was originally 'hillock clearing' (v. hygel ) or 'high clearing' (v. hēah , lēah ), with lee added pleonastically and later forms reduced by dissimilation.Cf. also Highley Hall 3supra , High Lee Green 152infra .
