Etymology

'Eric's valley', v. denu . The ON  pers.n. Eiríkr is fairly common in ME (Feilitzen 246, Björkman, NP 34–5), though it is rare in p.ns.The modern form with -ing - is analogical; parallels to -ing - from earlier -ic - already occur in OE  in spellings like Ceardinges ford ASC (F) s.a. 519 for Cerdices ford ib (A) (Karlström). On the variant spellings Air -, Air -, Er - cf. Phonol. § 11.
