Tuel Lane

Early-attested site in the Parish of Halifax

Historical Forms

  • Duell lane 1556 HAS
  • Duel lane 1624 Greave 1647 HAS 1779 Warl
  • Tuel Lane 1778 ib

Etymology

Tuel Lane, Duell lane 1556 HAS 13, 11, Duel lane 1624 Greave, 1647 HAS 6, 129et freq to 1779 Warl, Tuel Lane 1778 ib, cf. also Dewelfeld 1487WCR 1, Develfeld 1492MinAcct . The first el., judging by the spellings of the f.ns., is OE  dēofol 'devil', which in northern ME  had the form deul , dewle , etc., later dial. dule , with vocalisation of v before l . It may be noted that the word duel 'duel, combat' (which is formally possible in Tuel Lane) is not evidenced before the seventeenth century (NED s.v.) and is unlikely here. Cf. Dhoul's Pavement 63supra .
