Etymology

'Ford near Luddenden', v. Luddenden 132supra , ford .Remains have been found of an ancient ford which carried the Roman road from Manchester to Ilkley across the Calder (HAS 11, 165). The modern form 'Foot' arises by folk-etymology as the village is at the foot of Luddenden Dean (v. fōt ).
