Etymology

Hebden Dale, Hebden Hey, Hebden Wood, Hebden-bothom 1576 Ct, Hebden-hey 1643 PRHept, Hebden Wood 1835Sav , Hepden 1626 HAS 22, 85, Heptenhay 1631 PRHept, v. also Hebden Water (RNs.). 'Bramble or wild-rose valley', v. hēopa (or hēope ), denu , cf. Heptonstall supra . Shibden 92supra has a similar assimilation of -p - to -b - before -d -. The parts of this long deep valley above Hebden were called Shackleden 201, Widdop and Black Dean 202, 203infra .
