Castle Hill

Early-attested site in the Parish of Halifax

Historical Forms

  • Castle Croft 1309 Ext

Etymology

Castle Hill, 1309 Ext, v. castel , hyll . Local traditions credit the site with a Saxon camp (Stansf 13) and 'a castell' of the Earls of Warren (HAS 26, 93). There was a small mound (1775 Watson 55) and the field in which it stood was called Hell Croft, probably identical with Castle Croft 1309 Ext. Excavation has revealed no trace of any building (H. P. Kendall, HAS 26, 98), but it may have been the site of a medieval hunting lodge for the Forest of Sowerby.
