Etymology

Cleggcliffe (lost), Clegclyve 1274, 1275 WCR, Clegclif 1308 ib, Clegeclif 1285 ib, Gleg Clyff 1307 ib, Cleyclyff 1492MinAcct , from an ON  klegg 'clay' or ON  kleggi 'a haystack, a hill' and clif as in Clay Brook (prec.). The last spelling shows influence of clǣg 'clay'. The location of the place is not exactly known, but it is doubtful whether it can be associated with Gledcliffe (infra ); cf. Claremount 100infra .
