Etymology

Palace Ho, the palys called Palishous , Paleshows atte Motherholl 1536 Rent, (the ) Pallyshowse 1571 Ct, Pallace House 1621 HAS 18, 28, 1623 PRHept, 1640 WillYet freq to 1659 PRHept, the Pallas 1624 Greave, The Palace House 1655 WillS, cf. also Palace Holme 173supra , v. palis 'a palisade'. The allusion is to the palisade which surrounded Erringden Park (cf. Sowerby Ramble 161supra ); Palace Ho stands on the narrow strip of land between the Hebden Bridge- Erringden boundary (which marks the course of the palisade) and the R. Calder. Palace Holme was some 2 miles further up the river near Burnt Acres Bridge in Erringden (1842ValS ).
