Etymology

Snape, Snape 1313 WCR, 1486WCR 1, 1492MinAcct et freq to 1839ValS , Snap 1379 PT (p), Snapp 1462MinAcct , Snepe 1624 HAS 14, 191, cf. also Snaperode 1308 WCR, Snapelane 1690 HAS 14, 150. Probably 'poor pasture-land', v. snap , but difficult to distinguish from OE  snæp 'boggy piece of land'.
