Etymology

Wittonstall, Withtonstanclough (sic)1353 Stansf, Whittonstall 1719 ib. Probably 'willow farmstead', v. wīðig (often reduced to with (e ) in p.ns.), tūn-stall, cf. Saltonstall 125supra for this local p.n. type. The first spelling is probably an error for Withtonstallclough .
