Etymology

'(Amongst) the osiers', v. hyper , -um . The word is found independently only in dial. hipper 'osier' and the compound hipperholme 'a field where osiers are grown' (EDD), but it occurs in other p.ns. like Hipperley YN 99 and the late p.n. Hipperholme 182infra ; Hipperholme carries its use back to late OE times. On the spellings with Hup - cf. Phonol. § 33.
