Etymology

Alcomden, Ancomden (?sic for Aucomden ) 1678 Stansf, Alcomden 1580 WillY, 1644 PRHept, Alcomdain 1736 Wad 108, cf. also Halcom '1379 PT (p) (for Wadsworth), Alconley 1371 WCR (p). The first el. is un- certain, but it may well be the pers.n. Alcolm (e ), recorded in DB as the name of the tenant of Earby and Thornton in Craven (DB). The origin of this pers.n. is obscure (Feilitzen 143). v. denu 'valley'.
