Etymology

Asquith Bottom, 1839ValS , Asquith Bottom als. Old House 1765 HAS 36, 62, Ask (e )hilbothome 1554 ib 55, 1556 ib 13, 10, cf. also Askehillholme Milne 1597 ib 36, 59, Ashworth Clough 1765 ib 15, 265, v. botm (boðm) 'valley bottom', holmr 'water-meadow'. The first el. is uncertain but it could well be 'ash hill', v. askr , hyll . Old house also occurs 1750 TaxS.
