, cf. New Drop ii, 299supra , 266infra , Drop Clough ii, 308supra ; this p.n. may arise from a jocular use of the term new drop used from 1796 ( NED s.v. drop ) of ' a small trap - door in the floor of a gallows let down in the execution of condemned felons ' .
