Etymology

Mutter Hole (lost), Motherholl (e )1536 Rent, Motherholl (e )als. Paleshouse 1536 Stansf, Mutterhoile 1628FGr 22, 1653, 1659 PRHept, Mutterhole 1637 WillY, 1643 PRHept, 1751 Rent. The first el. is uncertain, but it could be connected with ME  motere 'to mutter' or with dial. mutter '(of the soil) to crumble', v. hol 1 'a hollow'. The place seems to have been near Palace Ho infra .
