Etymology

Ashwell (lost), le hasshewalker 1403MinAcct 47, Asshewell , Asshewelsike 1462 ib, the Ashwells 1659 HAS 10, 155. 'Well or spring by the ash-tree', v. æsc , wella , kjarr 'marsh', sīc 'stream'. The form -wal - is the Merc  wælla (ME  (WMidl ) walle ). The place was in the Ryburn valley, near Haugh End.
