Cownall (lost), Counale 1337 HAS 25, 41(p), Counall , Cownall 1379 PT (p), 1580 WillY, PRHfx, 1658 WillS, Cownel (l )1540Lister , 1721 HAS 25, 53. 'The cows' nook of land', from OE  cūna , gen.pl. of , halh . The site of this place was probably near Pyenest (cf. HAS 25, 49 ff).
