Etymology

'Sheep valley', v. scēap , denu . The first el. is the ONb  form scīp (as in Shipley 267, Skibeden (Skipton) pt. vi infra ) with later fluctuation between that and the Merc  form scēp (as in Shepley ii, 250supra ), but the distinction is perhaps not very significant as early spellings in Ship - occur in p.ns. in many parts of the country (as in Shipbourne K, Shipton O, Sa). Shibden also has assimilation of -p - to -b - before the voiced -d -, as in Hebden 191, Skibeden (pt. vi) infra .
