Etymology

This appears to be a compound of OE  leoht 'light, bright' and OE  ric (as in Rastrick 38infra ), probably in some such sense as 'strip of land (one growing with trees, etc.)' or 'narrow road', but it has later been confused with hrycg 'ridge' (as in Cookridge (Adel) pt. iv infra ) and ecg 'scarp'.
