Hartley Royd, Hertelotroide 1326 WCR (p), Hertleyrode 1331 ib (p), 1492MinAcct , 1544 YD i, Hartleyroide , Hartleyroyd (e )1485WCR 1, 1600 ib 3, 1624 Greave, 1709 WMB, Hartleroid 1536 Rent. Hartley may be a surname of local origin, perhaps from Hartley 181infra ; it is well-evidenced from the fifteenth century (PRHfx passim ), v. rod 1 'clearing'. The earliest spelling Hertelot - is probably an error for Hertelei -.
