Etymology

Swales Moor, Sweresmore 1485WCR , Swyremore 1492MinAcct 02, Swyresmoore 1499WCR 2d, Swale (s ) Moor 1709 WMB, 1756 LdsM, from the ME  nickname Swyer (a local form of squire or from ME  swire 'neck') and mōr . The change to Swale - may be a substitution of the surname Swale (cf. Ric. Swale 1379 PT).
