Etymology

Ringstone Edge, 'a ring of stones now called the Wolffold …. It gives its name to Ringstone Edge '1775 Watson 19; at that time the stone circle, which obviously had formerly in local lore been thought of as 'a wolf enclosure', was but a confused heap of stones, v. hring , stān , and for an account of the site cf. HAS 32, 169 ff.
