Etymology

Standing Stone, Standandstoneroyd 1403MinAcct 47, le Standanstone , le Standyngestone , Standyngend 1525WCR 2d, Standing Stone 1624 Greave, 1709 WMB. ME (Nth)standande , pres.pt. of standen 'to stand' (cf. -ande ), stān . In 1775 Watson 25 described the stone as 'a rude stone pillar…near six feet high'. The site is still marked on 6″ O.S. near the Mytholmroyd boundary on Long Causeway.
