Etymology

The hall is near the confluence of the R. Calder and Cragg Brook.The first el. is probably an old stream-name Elflet (probably the earlier name of Cragg Brook) which means 'eel stream', v. ǣl , flēot . There is now no trace of the burh or fortification.
