Etymology

'Clearing used as a stud', v. stōd , lēah , cf. Studley Royal (Lindrick) pt. v infra . In this p.n. the long vowel was retained as Stood -, and Stoyth - represents the local dial. development of ME ō to [ui], cf. Phonol. § 30.
