Etymology

Hanging Royd, Hingandrode , Hyngandrode 1324, 1331 WCR, -royd 1650 PRHept, Hinganroid 1643 ib. The spellings of this p.n. cannot be distinguished with certainty from those of Hanging Royd in Hebden Bridge 189infra . Both mean 'steep clearing', v. hengjandi (northern ME  hingande ), rod 1 .
