Salt Drake, Salt Drake Bridge

Early-attested site in the Parish of Halifax

Etymology

Salt Drake, Salt Drake Bridge, the former being the name of a portion of the lane connecting the road to Lancashire over Blackstone Edge (the Rochdale road) with Sowerby; it is doubtless a compound of salt 'salt' and dial. rake (v. hraca ) 'a rough path' and would be the name of an old salt-way; the modern form has been influenced by the dial. word drake 'darnel' (cf. Dernedrake 157, Hollin Dracke 277, Hollinrake 175 infra , Phonol. § 46).
