Etymology

Sim Ho (lost), Sym (e )howse 1539 HAS 20, 3, Symhouse 1586FGr 20, Simhouses 1713 ib, cf. also Symcarr 1612 ib, Symyng (e )1538 HAS 20, 2, 1575 ib 39, 173. 'Sim's house', from the ME  pers.n. or surname Sim (me ), a short form of Simon , v. hūs , kjarr 'marsh' (cf. Sim Carr 102supra ), eng 'meadow'. The same pers.n. (perhaps of the same man) occurs in Simmewifeclough 1449 HAS 16, 152, Sym Wyfe lande 1456WCR 1, 'Sim's wife's dell and land', v. clōh , land .
