Pennant Clough

Early-attested site in the Parish of Halifax

Historical Forms

  • Pendaunce (sic for Pendaunte) 1335 HAS
  • Pendaunt 1379 PT

Etymology

Pennant Clough, Pendaunce (sic for Pendaunte )1335 HAS 20, 91, Pendaunt 1379 PT (p); this could be, as Goodall 226 suggests, a Celtic p.n. corresponding to the common Welsh  p.n. Pennant (v. penno- 'hill', 'chief', nant 'valley, brook'), but the intrusive -d - is very early compared with such p.ns. as Pendleton, etc. La; it is more likely to be ME  pendaunte (cf. Fr pendant ) 'a slope, a declivity'.
