Etymology

In view of the later spellings, the DB spelling in -tonestun is clearly an error for -tonestall . 'Crooked farmstead', v. crumb , tūn-stall, and on the local use of the latter cf. Saltonstall 125supra . The allusion is probably to the crooked hill-side on which the farm stands.
