Etymology

Helliwell Syke, del Heliwall 1297 WCR (p), Heliwell 1323 Kirkst, Hellewell Sike 1709 WMB. 'Holy well', v. hǣlig , wella , sīc 'stream', cf. Holywell Green 50supra . There is a well nearby. The earliest spelling -wall is from WMidl  wælla (cf. Phonol. § 7).
