Etymology

'Illa's enclosure', v. -ing 4 , worð . The first el. may be the rare OE  pers.n. Ylla (LVD) or it may be an unrecorded Illa found in Eleigh Sf (OE æt Illanlege 1002 ASWills) and Illington Nf (Illynton 942–51 ASWills, Illinketuna 1086 DB) and cognate with OHG  Ilo , Illinc (FörstemannPN 998).
