Etymology

'Wood or glade where staves were got', v. stæf (gen.pl. stafa ), lēah , cf. Staveley (Db 301, La 199, YW v, 89). For the affix v. neoðera 'lower'; the feudal affix Godemund is from the family of Godemond , Godemund , Godemonte , who held Staveley (1341 Ipm, 1461, 1486, 1505 Kend i, 289, 328, 1504–15 ECP iv, 241, 1559–1615 PR(K)freq ); cf. also Godmond Hall (i, 158supra ); in 1461 (Kend i, 289)Stavely Godmound was stated to be 'in the vill of Strickland Ketel'.
