Etymology

The later spellings in Hew - and the modern pronunciation [ˈhiu-] show that the first el. had originally a long vowel -ō –; the name probably therefore means, as Lindkvist 56 suggests, 'the high ravine', from ON  hór , a variant of ON  hár (on which v. Lindkvist 224) and geil 'ravine', later replaced by the more common gil . The ravine referred to is that running north from the Gowan to Hugill Hall and Heights.
