Etymology

Possibly 'burnt ridge', v. brende 2 , hrycg . The later forms Brind - would be a normal development of brende , but for the earliest Brond -, Brund - forms we should have to assume a pa.part. form burned , metathesised to brund far earlier than might be expected (perhaps influenced by OE  brūnod 'browned', ON  brúnaðr 'dark-coloured').Such a ME form is assumed for Brundholme (Cu 321), which has Brund - from the late 13th century; cf. also Brundrigg(s) (i, 132 supra , 170 infra ), Brunt Knott (i, 175infra ).
