Etymology

The first theme is an older p.n. Skale-thwait 'clearing with a shieling' (v. skáli , þveit ), Lindkvist 122 noting an ONorw  parallel Skalaþuæit ; this older p.n. may be recorded in the name of Alexander de Scalchiweit 1256 Ass 72. v. hrycg (hryggr).
