Etymology

'(Land) under the hill', v. under , beorg . There are numerous examples of this type of elliptical formation with under in Westmorland (Underley i, 44, Underhelm i, 100supra , Undermillbeck i, 178infra , etc., cf. under ii, 296); the type is frequent in the Faroes (cf. Matras, FærN 301). The hill is one of those like Knott or Helsington Barrows (i, 105, 109 infra ) forming the long ridge between Underbarrow Beck and the Kent.
