Etymology

Knipe Tarn, 1836KCR , Gnipe , Gnype 1310 Ipm (p), 1329 NB 141(p), 1390, 1404 Kend i, 344(p); Knype continued as a local surn. in Crook (1546 Kend i, 346, 1600 NB 141), and it is possible that the tarn (v. tjǫrn ) is directly from the surname, which is probably of local origin; v. gnípa 'steep rock or peak' (cf. Knipe ii, 191infra ).
